Executive Summary
An emerging sporting goods company had a genuinely new competitive game and real enthusiasm from the people who played it, but no settled answer to what the product was, who it was for, or how it should be sold. As fractional CMO, I took the brand from market intelligence through positioning, a full brand system, and the ecommerce and site architecture that would carry it to market.
The Challenge
A new game sits in a category buyers don't have a word for yet. Without a clear position, it drifts toward whichever comparison the shopper reaches for first, and that comparison sets the price ceiling and the purchase occasion. The owners needed to decide the position before spending on reach.
Research and Diagnosis
The first phase of market research mapped the competitive landscape and category definition, direct and indirect competitors, competitive messaging, pricing and margin, purchase occasions, and how the brand appeared in AI search. The second phase translated that into customer segmentation, jobs to be done, a brand promise and value proposition, a messaging hierarchy, product architecture, and a prioritized view of revenue opportunities.
What We Did
I built a brand book of roughly 80 pages covering brand pillars, personas, a message matrix, claim discipline, and future product architecture. I ran a structured working session with the owners to pressure-test the tagline decision before it went to customers. On the commercial side I delivered an information architecture audit recommending one unified site with commerce and an institutional purchasing path built in, a mobile homepage build specification for the design team, and an activation plan for a partner audience that put measurement in place before the first send.
What It Means
For a product nobody has seen before, positioning is the first commercial decision and the most expensive one to get wrong, so it deserves the evidence before the ad budget does.
